Verdé: The Birth of the Others

Book Cover

“Verdé: The Birth of the Others” explores a speculative vision of the near future heavily dependent on Artificial Intelligence and run by powerful and acquisitive multinational corporations where only a tiny minority can thrive. It contrasts this with a simpler world where people live sustainably and love and support each other regardless of wealth, ethnicity, and gender. The book raises issues of inequality and economic structures that make it impossible for the vast majority to live peacefully and thrive. Themes include trauma, the impact of childhood experiences on mental health, declining human fertility, and how authorities manipulate human choices to satisfy their agendas. Key themes of this book also include speculative fiction, societal challenges, sustainability, climate change, storms and floods, environmental collapse, gain of function, gene-editing, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence.

Unique Aspects:

  1. Multiple Human Perspectives: The story is told from various perspectives, focusing heavily on dialogue that can be intercepted if trigger words are used. Safer communication methods include aliases, whiteboards, sign language, and telepathy.

   Quote from the book:
“I had forgotten that everything we say can be intercepted and ‘replicant’ is probably one of the trigger words that would activate a recording.”

  1. Issues of Young People: The book addresses concerns related to sexual relationships as young people transition into adulthood.

   Quote from the book:
“I can be naked and safe. I promise you, May.” “You will always be safe. It’s me I am concerned about.”

  1. Societal Structure: It prompts readers to consider the makeup of society, particularly hierarchical structures and the nature of capitalism, proposing an alternative reality where humankind and the ‘Others’ live symbiotically. The narrative explores concepts like neurodivergence, mental health, social deprivation, inequality, fairness, and the right to a peaceful existence.
